A celebration of animals free from captivity!!

We talk a lot about how bad milk is for you and how cruel the dairy, beef, and veal industries are, but there’s not enough talk about how beautiful and majestic cow’s 🐮 really are.💜
Before we begin ➡ A cow is a mature female and a bull an adult male of a bovine family. Cattle is the name for the whole “cow” family.
1⃣  There are about 920 different breeds of cows in the world.
2⃣  Cows can live 25 years.
3⃣  Cows have almost total 360 degree panoramic vision and are able to see colors, except red. They can detect odors up to 5 miles away.
4⃣  Cows can hear lower and higher frequencies better than humans.
5⃣  A cow weighs about 1400 pounds. A 1000 pound cow produces an average of 10 tons of manure a year. (Now that’s some holy shit.)
6⃣  The bond between a cow and her calf is very strong and continues after the calf is fully grown. In non-commercial herds, some cows will nurse their calves for up to 3 years.
7⃣  Cows are very social animals. They form large herds and will bond to some herd members while avoiding others. They “moo” and use different body positions and facial expressions to communicate with each other.
8⃣  A Holstein’s spots are like a fingerprint. No two cows have exactly the same pattern of spots.
9⃣  Cows have cloven hooves. In galloping through boggy places or in deep mud, cattle can run faster than a horse.
It’s an udder shame that we still use, abuse, and kill them.
Cut the cattle from your diet! #vegansofig

Email Update 17.04.12
Hi Everyone,

We have some amazing news to share!

We have been hoping to relocate some hens from factory farms to forever homes so they can live out their lives peacefully. We have been successful at finding a home for three hens those far. Their names are Mirha, Kellie, and Jill. They have been named after great social justice activists Mirha Soliel-Ross, Kellie VanOrden, and Jill Phipps. Attached you will find pictures of these special hens.

It is our hope to find homes for more hens. If you are able to adopt a hen or know someone who is please contact Niagara Animal Defense League. Niagara ADL will pay for the chicken coop and vet bills if needed.

If you are unable to home these exceptional animals please consider donating to Niagara ADL to help pay for the cost of coops, vet bills, and so forth. Our paypal is niagaraanimaldefenseleague@gmail.com

A special thanks goes out to Brittney Szucs for her love of these birds.

Strategy. Community. Longevity.

Animal Place is currently selling these awesome posters to help pay for feed for the thousands of rescued hens remaining from the largest farm animal rescue in California’s history.Since 100% of each sale goes back to the hens, each poster bought will be used to buy one bag of feed. Although one bag goes far, these ladies go through a ton of ‘em, trust me, so every purchase helps. Please, if you can, buy one today or reblog this and let your friends know. Thanks!

Oh yay, my Food Fight order has arrived! Remember the fundraiser for Animal Place and the Turlock Hen Rescue a few weeks back? Well, I decided to stock up on some goodies while the getting was good. Mostly I just needed some Dandies for a few recipes, but I treated myself to some other goodies too (you know, for the animals!): Justin’s Hazelnut Butter, the new Snap bar from Go Max Go, Butler’s Soy Curls - and some Nacheez and Queso, since y’all keep asking me about them! Plus a stylin’ new tote bag and some deliciously snarky vegan buttons.
Cheesy, chocolaty, marshmallowy goodness, here I come!

A heartwarming update about the Turlock hen rescue! Turns out, the hens love the sun! And spreading their wings! And food and water! Who would have thought.

Don’t forget to donate Farm Sanctuary and Animal Place for continued care of the 4000+ rescue hens. And don’t buy eggs!

A Google map of all the farm animal sanctuaries I know of in the US (and some in Canada). I hope to one day visit them all.

Niagara Animal Defense League: Our 2012 Working Visit Tour Rolls On!

niagaraadl:

Last Saturday members of Niagara ADL and The Vegan Police headed down to Stratford, On for a working visit at Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary. This was our first stop on our 2012 working tour that was developed for three reasons

  • Grow the social media reach and exposure for local Sanctuaries

This working tour idea is great and should be duplicated! Get to your local sanctuaries and lend a hand!
